Set between 1832 to 1834, the drama features a period in fashion, shortly before Queen Victoria ascended the throne, that provided a bridge between the columnar high-waisted Empire-line dress of the Georgian era and the full-blown crinoline which reached its apogee in 1859. The transition was marked by the fashions of the Romantic era, a period researched by costume designer Tom Pye, a veteran of both Broadway and West End productions, as well as a designer for opera and ballet:

‘I realised how much Anne was kind of a chameleon – she had her life on the estate, but she also hobnobbed around with a lot of aristocracy and court. So there were a lot of ex-girlfriends and friends that were all very, very highly dressed.’

Following consultation with historian Anne Choma, a specialist on Lister, Pye investigated period clothing at various museums, including Bath Museum, Chertsey Museum and Winchester City Museum. He also worked with Cosprop, the costume house of Oscar-winning costume designer and costumier John Bright.
